What Is an IEE?

An independent educational evaluation (IEE) is a second opinion regarding your child’s need for special education services in school. It is a comprehensive evaluation done by a pediatric therapist who can assess your child’s developmental skills and limitations and make recommendations for their individualized educational program (IEP).

When Would I Need an IEE?

You should request an IEE if your child has been evaluated for their IEP and one of two situations occur:
1
Your child is denied for special education services.
2
Your child is approved for special education services, but you feel those services are incorrect or inadequate to support their educational needs.

Am I Entitled to an IEE for My Child?

Under federal law, you are entitled to an IEE for your child. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) gives parents the right to request an evaluation from a qualified third-party provider that is paid for by your child’s school district. You can request your child’s IEE be completed by Radiant Kids Therapy whether or not we’re listed as a preferred provider by your school district.

How Can I Get an IEE for My Child?

To get an IEE for your child, you will need to submit a written request to your child’s IEP case manager or their school district’s Special Education Director. If you have done this and haven’t heard back, or if you need help with this process, call us at (858) 753-5082 and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
